Coca-Cola Christmas History

The History of Coca-Cola Christmas Truck

Believe it or not, the Coca-Cola Christmas truck first appeared on TV in 1995 and here’s a chance to watch the first-ever commercial (it’s still amazing!).

The Coca‑Cola Christmas trucks were created by the American advertising agency W.B. Doner, and the campaign was named internally as ‘Christmas Caravans’.

It’s also cool to know that the same company behind the Star Wars films made the lighting on the illuminated trucks for the original commercial.

By 1998, newer commercials featuring the Coca-Cola trucks were broadcast in over 100 countries.

The Coca-Cola 2023 TV Commercial

The latest 2023 Coca-Cola commercial is below (with music performed by up-and-coming UK artist Celeste).

It’s good, but we are not sure anything can beat the original commercial above.

More on the history of Coca-Cola and Christmas.

A Christmas commercial for Coca-Cola from the 1930's as featured in the American publication, The Saturday Evening Post.

If you think Coca-Cola’s ties with Christmas are a modern invention, think again. It goes back to 1931. However, it’s not true that Coca-Cola is responsible for the red Santa Claus.

Many people mistakenly believe that the red Santa is the work of Haddon Sundblom, and his drawings of Santa that were created for Coca-Cola advertising in the early 1930s, but the red suit first appeared on the covers of the famous magazine Harper’s Weekly at least forty years before.

According to Wikipedia, the first appearance of a modern Santa Claus, complete with what we consider the defacto “Santa suit”, was created by Thomas Nast. Prior to this, Santa’s suit was tan-coloured!

The drawings created by Thomas Nast were of a small Santa who could slide down chimneys, but his later works made him full-size. In addition, Thomas Nast was also the first to draw Santa, wearing a red suit with fur lining, a nightcap, and a black belt with a large buckle.

Rather than taking the credit for our much loved modern-day Santa, Coca-Cola has publicly attributed the suit’s red colour to Nast’s earlier work. Still, we think it’s fair to say that the work by Haddon Sundblom and the advertising of Coca-Cola from 1931 onwards certainly “standardised” and made the fat red Santa in the red suit extremely famous.
