(NB: The podcast below starts at the exact time to hear Silia chatting!).
Silia Kapsis was born on the 5th of December, 2006, in Australia and is 17 years old in 2024.
Silia Kapsis was born and raised in Sydney, Australia.
Her father is a well-known singer from Cyprus (Giorgos Kapsis) and her mother is a lawyer from Greece.
Silia Kapsis is well-known in Australia as a presenter on Nickelodeon, where she hosted “Nick News” and, along with her fellow hosts, Silia was nominated for the Aussie/Kiwi “Legend of the Year” category at the 2023 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
In addition to working as a TV presenter, she is a lead singer with the Australian Youth Performing Arts Company and a member of the prestigious “ImmaBeast” Dance Company based in Los Angeles.
Silia Kapsis wrote her first song, “Who Am I?” at just 12 years old, which was followed by other tracks, including “No Boys Allowed” and “Disco Dancer” and her fourth single “Night Out”.

The selection of Silia Kapsis to represent Cyprus in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest results from an unusual problem!
Initially, the chosen performer was meant to be the winner of a TV talent show airing concurrently in Cyprus and Greece. However, this plan ran into trouble with the organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest (the European Broadcasting Union or EBU for short) because the talent show was broadcast on a channel that isn’t a member of the EBU.
Due to this, the National Broadcaster in Cyprus (CYBC, which broadcasts under the brand RIK) made a direct appointment instead and chose Silia Kapsis and the song “Liar” (written by a Greek composer, Demetris Kontopoulos).
In addition, the Cyprus Eurovision Song 2024 also has an interesting back story.
“Liar” was initially written as the Greek entry last year, but in the end, it wasn’t selected or publicly released.
This means the song remained eligible as an entry this year.
Due to this, it won’t be very comfortable for Greece if Cyprus beats them with this song at the Eurovision Song Contest in May.
Cyprus entered the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1981.
The best placing for Cyprus so far was in 2018 when Eleni Foureira finished in second place with “Fuego” (which means fire) in Lisbon Portugal. See the official video below.
Cyprus has never won or hosted the main Eurovision Song Contest. However, Cyprus did host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Limassol in 2008!
Yes and no!
The song Liar is written by Elke Tiel (lyrics) and Demetris Kontopoulos (music).
The song was originally performed by Melissa Mantzoukis when she competed on a Greek TV show to represent Greece in last year’s Eurovision Song Contest (2023).
Mellissa performing the song “Liar” was the number one choice of the voting audience at home.
However, the channel (ERT) introduced a feature where, in addition to the voting public, a panel of 70 people had a 50.6% say in the outcome.
Ultimately, the “ERT committee” voted for a different song and artist as their top pick.
Since then, Mellissa has claimed that the committee treated her unfairly and even launched legal action against the TV channel.
Yes!
In 1998 the song “Thimame”, by Yiannis Demetriou was all set to be performed at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin until someone spotted the same song had been entered into the Cypriot National Final in 1984.
This was a problem because all Eurovision songs (lyrics and music compositions) must be original and not released and/or publicly performed in part or in full before a set release date each year.
For the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, the “release date” was set as the 1st of September 2023.
This year’s Cyprus entry, “Liar”, was publicly performed before this date (see question 8 above), so we are not sure why it has been allowed to be the entry for Cyprus in 2024.
Fingers crossed, it won’t be disqualified at the last minute!
All Eurovision shows, including the two semi-finals, will be broadcast by CYBC’s “Rik” Television here in Cyprus (with commentary in Greek), with international versions streaming live on YouTube.
Cyprus will compete in the first half of the first semi-final, live at 10 pm in Cyprus on Tuesday, the 7th of May 2024.
The second semi-final takes place on Thursday, the 9th of May, again at 10 pm Cyprus time.
If all goes well, Silia Kapsis will represent Cyprus in the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on Saturday, the 11th of May 2024, at 10 pm here in Cyprus.
If you have access to BBC 1 or BBC iPlayer, you can also watch both semi-finals and the main show (with English commentary by the legendary Graham Norton) on the 7th, 9th and 11th of May 2024 at 8 pm UK time/10 pm here in Cyprus).
